Unfortunately, the Bernie’s Benefit event and poster auction has been cancelled due to venue double-booking. My sincere apologies for any confusion or inconvenience, especially if you happened to read this after looking for the event.
After being rescheduled from Saturday, February 4th, to Friday February 17th, then just over a week away, having the event bumped yet again to Saturday the 18th, it was a matter of diminishing returns. Upon arriving just after noon the day of the event to start work on setup and placement of things like the sound system and 16-20 11″x17″ framed posters, statements, and silent auction bid sheets, an art exhibit that set up and opened the night before was in place, leaving little room for the posters for this event, without clumping them in different corners of the room. Despite nights like Jack! The House! looking and sounding great in the space, working around a pre-existing exhibit here, it was clear that the Benefit’s requirements got in the way of the artwork that was to be kept on display until early March.
Sorry, I was really looking forward to having a nice, simple display of posters, and a basic, reliable DJ setup with speakers placed in symmetry beside the DJ table, not in different parts of the room.
There may or may not be one more try at it if a suitable, available space comes up.
Pick up the new February issue of V-Rag, where I’m interviewed and offer ten favourite DJ picks! p.36
More like this, and hi-res, thanks to Daniel Gray, at his Flickr page HERE
Thanks to each and every one of you who came out on Friday!
Next ROBOTERIA is FRI FEB 10.
ROBOTERIA’s Guest DJ Fri Jan 27 is none other than manos. We actually met in the Fall of 2008, as we were putting up posters downtown for our events. I had my original “robot hand” ROBOTERIA posters, when 1181 hosted this night. manos had posters for something called “GALAXION”. I recognized the name from the video game (which was always getting confused with Galaga back in the day). He and a friend explained the premise of how they’d get a space, bring in vintage arcade cabinets and let people play for free, so no hassling with those quarters! Plus the selection of music played a vital role, too.
We later met when I had sort of a “Recurring Guest Star” role DJ’ing the basement of Sin City for just about a year (and those were some of the most satisfying crowds to play for). We had a lot of great – if brief – chats about music, and compliments for each other’s track selections. But we never had the chance to spin in the same room together.
And more recently, as I was getting more and more determined to start up ROBOTERIA on a Friday or Saturday night, manos was someone I kept in the loop, not just because I wanted him and his tunes, but because of his encouragement and support with each little lead, hint, announcement, etc, that seemed to indicate this project was finally moving forward. I don’t doubt his sincerity in wanting to see ROBOTERIA finally happen again – and work, this time.
A great big THANK YOU to everyone who came out last night! To DJ PANDEMONIUM for bringing his tunes, his energy, his help and assistance spreading the word and with setup and take-down at the end of the night! To De Kollektiv for letting us use their sound gear, and The Den at The Barclay staff for having us (I told you we’d get a nice crowd!) Thanks to BlitzAndShitz’s Raziel for noticing and plugging the event some more.
I hope you all had a great time, enjoyed the space, the sounds, and all got home safe despite that snow!
We’ll see you all in two weeks – Fri Jan 27th!
